Title: Exploring Gravitational-Wave Lensing in Long-Duration Signals
Timeline: July–August (in person, with the possibility to continue remotely after the project period)
Description: Gravitational waves, like light, can be lensed by massive objects between the source and observer, producing multiple images or diffraction patterns depending on the lens mass. These effects offer powerful ways to probe dark matter, lens populations, and cosmology, and are actively searched for within the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration. In this project, the student will study long-duration inspiral signals where lens-source motion and frequency evolution play a crucial role in regimes particularly relevant for next-generation detectors such as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer. The project is aimed at highly motivated students with a strong interest in gravitational-wave astrophysics and solid analytical skills.
