Oscillations in accretion disks around magnetized stars

Supervisors: Sukalpa Kundu and Miljenko Cemeljic, email: skundu@camk.edu.pl

Title: Oscillations in accretion disks around magnetized stars.
Time: 4 weeks, any time between July and September.

First week: Intro to MHD & PLUTO.
Second week: Simulation set-up and testing.
Third and Fourth week: Analysis of results.

Form: only on-site in CAMK Warsaw.

Project description:

Accretion flow around magnetized stars is governed by various processes, such as viscosity, resistivity, magnetic fields, the star’s rotation, and many more. Recently, we discovered a periodic, coherent oscillation of the inner accretion disk in the propeller regime of such star-disk systems. The project will be based on exploring the stability of these oscillations under different physical conditions.

Workplan:
The student will receive guidance on introductory magnetohydrodynamics and accretion physics. Following that, the student will be introduced to the PLUTO code and the star-disk setup. They will learn how to run these simulations in HPC environments, analyse the results, and visualize them.

Audience:
Undergrads and Master’s students with interest and some knowledge of coding in Linux, C & Python.
